Rt. Rev. Dr. Geevarghese Mar Theodosius Episcopa

January 05, 2009 the Diocese of the Mar Thoma Church of North America and Europe welcomed its third resident Bishop, Rt. Rev. Dr. Geevarghese Mar Theodosius.

'Bishop Theo' as he is popularly known among our Youth Fellowship members, was born on February 19, 1949 to Dr. K. J. Chacko and Mary Chacko. He is a native of Ashtamudi in Kollam District and belongs to the Kizhakke-Chakkalayil family.

After his schooling at M. T. Seminary High School, teenager George Jacob studied at Baselios College, Kottayam and at Mar Thoma College, Thiruvalla for the Bachelors Degree in Science. After majoring in Physics, he joined Leonard Theological College, Jabalpur and took BD Degree in 1972, along with Rev. Dr. K. S. Mathew (present Sabha Secretary) and Rev. Dr. T. J. Thomas. In 1980, he took a Masters Degree in 'Comparative Religions' from Visva-Bharathi University, West Bengal and in 1986, a Doctorate from McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada.

Erstwhile at the age of 23, he entered into priesthood and became a Deacon on June 24, 1972. Later on February 24, 1973 he was ordain as 'Kasseesa' and thereafter recognized as Rev. George Jacob.

After 16 years of ministering several parishes including Mumbai, Calcutta, Toronto, Kozhikode and Nanthancode/Trivandrum, and serving as Director of Thomas Mar Athanasius Orientation Centre at Manganam/Kottayam, Rev. Dr. George Jacob was elevated to the position of 'Ramban' on November 04, 1989. He was consecrated as Episcopa on December 09, 1989 along with Rev. C. I. George, (later known as Rt. Rev. Geevarghese Mar Athanasius) and Rev. Euyakim I. Cheeran (later known as Rt. Rev. Dr. Euyakim Mar Coorilos, the second resident Diocesan Bishop, Mar Thoma Church of North America and Europe.

Ramban Rev. Dr. George Jacob on consecration as Episcopa was conferred with the celibacy name of Rt. Rev. Dr. Geevarghese Mar Theodosius. His de'but service was with the Kunnamkulam-Madras Diocese. Before taking charge of the Diocese of North America and Europe, he also served as the Diocesan Bishop of (1) Kunnamkulam-Malabar, (2) Trivandrum-Kollam, (3) Chennai-Bangalore, and (4) Malaysia-Singapore & Australia Dioceses, from 1990 through 2008.

Rt. Rev. Dr. Geevarghese Mar Theodosius is the only Mar Thoma Bishop having his own website: www.martheodosius.com. In the words of Thirumeni's former long time serving Secretary, Rev. K. E. Geevarghese (Trivandrum-Kollam Diocese): "Mar Theodosius is an innovator in the mission of the Church. The life and mission of Theodosius Tirumeni reveals that he is a shepherd, who thinks and cares for the flock all the time." So also quoting Thirumeni's former Secretary, Rev.Mathew Baby (Chennai-Bangalore Diocese):"Mar Theodosius is one of the bishops who hardly smile; yet he connects with both the young and the old in a peculiarly charismatic way. Thirumeni is systematic, punctual, visionary, caring and techno savvy. He hates charity but loves the poor and maintains an exemplary rapport with all."

In honor of Mar Theodosius as he turned a sexagenarian, a Festschrift volume "In Search of Christian Identity in the Community" was published early 2009. It is a token of love and affection expressed by his well-wishers, and fellow Bishops of the Mar Thoma Church. The contributors celebrate the basic pastoral and prophetic concern of Mar Theodosius under the general theme of the book. The articles and essays in this book weave a common thread of the New Humanity in Christ. It also depicts that Mar Theodosius is a good scholar.

We wish Thirumeni a long period of Episcopal Ministry in God's vineyard.
